GETTING SET UP

These are the things you will need:

  • Drawing pencils (preferably HB-7B)
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • Ruler
  • Drawing paper
  • Tortillon or cotton swab (optional)

STEP 1

Let us begin by setting up our grid. Take out a ruler and your 5H pencil. If you do not have that pencil, use the hardest one you have. Draw lines down and across your page keeping them all 2 inches apart. Make sure you draw them lightly because we are going to erase them once we have drawn the shape of the airplane.

Once you finish the grid, draw the outline of the fighter jet focusing only on one box of the grid at a time. Draw the X shown below lightly as a guide. Switch to a HB pencil. Then, look at the jet as though it is black and the space around it is white. Draw the outline. Not everything may be perfect when you finish this step, but we can fix that when we add more of the details.

When you are finished the first step, your drawing should look something like this:

STEP 2

The first step is the hardest because getting the proportions right is extremely difficult. This step should be easier.

Erase your grid and take out a 4B and 6B pencil. Draw all the darkest areas first. They are highlighted in orange. If they are not black use your 4B pencil.

Take out your 2B pencil. Use it to blend the dark areas together with the lighter areas. Then draw the lightest areas under the wings and in the cockpit.

STEP 3

Once you are finished all the dark areas, take out your HB, F, 2H pencils and start shading in all the lighter areas. Use your HB pencil for the lighter paint and your 2H for the darker paint. Use a cotton swab to blend the light areas together. Define all the edges of your drawing again with your HB pencil. Add clouds by smudging in certain sections and then erasing to add texture. Repeat until you achieve the desired look.
