This eye drawing is one of my favorite drawings. I used mostly charcoal for this drawing because the eye is smooth and charcoal is much smoother of a medium than graphite. As I worked on the reflections in the eye, it seemed to start coming out of the page.

Eye Drawing Tip

Define the eye lids. Use soft graphite to shade in the top area of the eye. Think about it. When the eyelid is open it blocks light. This creates a shadow just above the eyelid. You may wish to start with this shadow because it can be used to define where the eye will be placed. If you are not sure how big your eye needs to be, use a hard pencil to lightly sketch in this shadow. Later, once you like the position of the eye, go over the shadow with a darker pencil.

*** Note: You may have to lighly erase the hard graphite markings before applying the soft graphite so that it will have something to grab on to.
